Basic vs. Advanced Tracking

Vocus.io supports three modes of tracking: Basic, Advanced (aka "Per-Recipient"), and Auto. Everything in this article applies to both email open and link tracking.

Basic Tracking
In this mode, a single tracking identifier (or tracking pixel) will be used for all recipients. Therefore if you have more than one recipient in your To/CC/BCC, and one of them opens your email, you will get a "Someone opened your email".

Advanced / Per-Recipient Tracking
In this mode, a unique tracking identifier (or tracking pixel) will be used for each recipient. Therefore if you have more than one recipient in your To/CC/BCC, and one of them opens your email, you will be able to know who among them was the person who opened it - i.e. "John opened your email".

Automatic Tracking
In this mode, if you are sending an email to more than one person, Vocus.io will choose "Advanced / Per-Recipient Tracking". If you are sending an email to one person only, then "Basic Tracking" will be applied.

How can I switch from Basic to Advanced?
This setting can be configured from Dashboard > Settings > click on your email > "Default Behavior".

Which one should I choose?
We recommend you leave it at the default setting, i.e. "Auto".

Why does this setting exist?
The Advanced / Per-Recipient mode obviously has the advantage of more granular tracking, however it sometimes conflicts with other Chrome extensions depending on a user's unique setup.
